The New Legacy Charter School ribbon cutting was such a phenomenal event! It was a full house including administration, funders, faculty, camera crews from various news stations, parents and students, as well as honorary guest Lieutenant Governor Joe Garcia.

New Legacy students were able to share their stories and experiences through poetry and theater. A few students were able to share their goals for the future and the new opportunities they now have through New Legacy. And if that wasn’t inspiring enough, all the babies dropped in parade style to say hello!

New Legacy officially opened their doors on August 31, 2015 to 90 pregnant and parenting high school students ages 14-21 and 45 of their children ages 0-3. Authorized by the Charter Schools Institute, the public charter school, located at 2091 Dayton Street, provides rigorous and an engaging academic program and parenting education with a focus on health and wellness.  New Legacy also features an onsite early learning center.

The strategic collaboration between ULC and New Legacy brings positive opportunities for this unique population.  Only 51% of teen parents graduate from high school nationally, and New Legacy with the help of ULC now enrolls 90 students and 50 children in their program this year. The flexible curriculum and services offered in Aurora will prepare the young people for college and careers.

Lt. Governor Joe Garcia stated, “Educational opportunities are critical to all Coloradans, but some students face greater challenges than others. Teen parents, with the right support, can succeed and build strong families and stronger communities. New Legacy will provide that support.”
