The Denver Post Discusses Gentrification and Displacement in Elyria-Swansea with Zocalo Community Development
As ULC formally announced Zocalo Community Development as our new development partner at 48th and Race, the Denver Post published an article highlighting the continuous change Elyria-Swansea residents have felt over the past decade. With the I-70 expansion and remodel of the National Western Center, gentrification has ensued throughout metro Denver neighborhoods, with residents the subject to a wave of change in recent years that often ends in displacement.
David Zucker, the CEO of Zocalo Community Development, spoke with Jon Murray of the Denver Post regarding hopes to prevent ongoing displacement with the 48th and Race transit-oriented development site. “For hundreds of years, cities and their downtowns were the (economic) escalators for immigrants and those of lesser incomes and education. And now downtowns are the playgrounds of the wealthy. So places like Elyria-Swansea, these are the last places where there’s a beachhead of affordability,” Zucker told the Post on Sunday.
