Last week one of Urban Land Conservancy’s (ULC) future tenants, Clinica Tepeyac was featured in a U.S. News & World Report article. The article highlighted Clinica’s findings as it relates to providing better quality health care through screening for social problems. Clinica Tepeyac is a nonprofit healthcare clinic for the medically underserved and was established in 1993 after a community needs assessment revealed the major obstacles barring health care access to a portion of Denver’s population. Since then, Clinica has provided excellent affordable healthcare to low-income residents.

In the article, Clinica is highlighted for their work in addressing social determinants of health during patient screenings. Addressing variables like housing, food security and education can help doctors recognize symptoms that would otherwise go undetected in a traditional screening.

“If our patients have to focus on the basic resources to live their daily lives, they’re not going to listen to the health care provider who says, ‘you should check your blood sugar every day,’” explained Vicki Garza, a case manager at Clinica Tepeyac, explained in the article.

Clinica Tepeyac will occupy the entire first floor of ULC’s future development at 48^th and Race. The transit oriented development (TOD) will also include permanently affordable housing and additional community serving space.
