ULC Fall 2015 News and Updates
Fall 2015 Update
ULC Releases a Report on how ULC and New Legacy Charter School Created an Innovative School Facility in Aurora
Opened in August 2015, New Legacy Charter School provides college preparatory high school education together with a daycare facility for teen parents and their children. It is the first school of its kind in Aurora, located within a zip code with one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the State of Colorado. ULC released a report, authored by Alan Gottlieb, describing how the school was only made possible through a unique partnership between ULC and New Legacy.
The report also emphasizes the need for a School Facility Fund, a resource desperately needed in Metro Denver. Such a fund would create and support a scalable, replicable model for school facility development. Without a fund supporting the creation of charter facilities, schools may be granted a charter, but will struggle to find an affordable place to open a school.
A New Art, Culture and Heritage Trail is Coming to Denver’s Park Hill Neighborhood. Meet 303 ArtWay!
Based on concerns expressed by a majority of long term community residents and stakeholders, ULC recognized the need to enhance the connections between the new 40th & Colorado Commuter Rail Station on the A Line (opening April 22, 2016) and the Greater Park Hill neighborhood. ULC, in partnership with many nonprofit partners, is working with the community to determine how to best create this new bike and pedestrian multi-use urban trail to address the community’s outcry for better connectivity.
ULC Celebrates another Successful Year in Transit-Oriented Development!
ULC made its fourth acquisition at Sheridan Station on the W Line, assembling a larger development footprint for affordable housing development! Earlier this year, ULC acquired a 6 acre site in the Elyria-Swansea neighborhood which will be a multi-phased master site development. Stay tuned for development updates in 2016.
Two developments will be celebrating grand openings next year: Garden Court Apartments at Yale Station (developed by Mile High Development and Koelbel and Co) and Park Hill Station Apartments (developed by DelWest) at the 40th and Colorado Station on the A Line commuter rail opening on April 22, 2016. Next year promises to be another significant year for the development of affordable housing and commercial space along transit corridors!
Denver Shared Spaces Hosts Learning Community Series at Corky Gonzales Library at Mile High Vista!
Last week, Denver Shared Spaces hosted the final of the 4-part Learning Community Series at the Denver Public Library’s Corky Gonzales Branch. The session focused on specific tools to help us collaborate with our community as a way to increase the impact of our shared space centers. Our expert panelists were Joseph Montalbano with studiotrope Design Collective, the lead architect for the Library, Viviana Casillas, a program manager at Corky, and Diana Lapierre, Director of Community Relations for DPL. We learned specific ways in which residents around the library were involved in the planning – both early in the process and well as part of the on-going programming. This session wrapped up our year-long exploration of how shared spaces can catalyze and support collaboration in our community. We look forward to hosting another series next year!
