Annual Keating Report Offers Mid-Year Government Spending Review, Focuses on Affordable Housing

Each year, the Keating Report publishes a mid-year review of government budgets and spending. This year, the 2016 review focused on Denver and its rapidly growing population. The city’s need for affordable housing has coupled this recent growth, which the report highlighted with Mayor Michael Hancock’s plans to allocate $150 million towards affordable housing over the next 10 years.

Hancock’s goal to build 6,000 units of affordable housing in the next 10 years is a step in the right direction, but one that is also needed sooner rather than later. The Garden Court Apartments, which represent just one percent of Hancock’s goal, cost an estimated $15 million to develop. The 66 units of affordable housing celebrated their grand opening this past August, and illustrate our city’s need to make affordable housing a priority.
