New Legacy Charter School Hosts Annual Fundraising Breakfast, Launches Capital Campaign
Each year, New Legacy Charter School hosts an annual fundraising breakfast to support their mission in providing quality education for pregnant and parenting teens and their children. Now in their fourth year, New Legacy aims to empower the student population to create a legacy of education, quality parenting and personal success. Located in Original Aurora, New Legacy has witnessed tremendous success rates, including a graduation rate for high school age parents that is nearly double the national average.
New Legacy’s Executive Director, Steven Bartholomew, welcomed guests to this year’s fundraising breakfast. Thursday morning also provided a platform for New Legacy to officially announce the launch of a capital campaign in order to raise funds to purchase the school building outright from Urban Land Conservancy (ULC).
New Legacy was ULC’s first real estate investment in Aurora. In 2014, ULC acquired and demolished a vacant bowling alley to pave the way for the construction of a 23,000 square foot charter school. We have strongly advocated for New Legacy to purchase their building, and will support their fundraising efforts so they have the ability to own their school building and increase operational efficiency. In alignment with ULC’s mission to ensure permanently community beneficial real estate, we will continue to own the land in a 99 year renewable ground lease. By joining ULC’s community land trust (CLT), we will ensure the property is always used for positive community impact.
In addition to New Legacy’s exciting announcement, the event included multiple presentations by current and past students. Each woman’s powerful story shone a light on the importance of New Legacy in the Aurora community. Ceci, who is currently enrolled at New Legacy along with her 5-month-old daughter, believes that her current education has made her more than a statistic, and helped her align with a successful future and bold career path.
“New Legacy helped me see my future from a new perspective,” she told the audience. “Before I didn’t even want a career, I just wanted a job. And today, I want a career.”
Each student spoke towards the life changing opportunities New Legacy provides and the stability it ensures. On behalf of ULC, we are impressed and thankful for the vision New Legacy created and the success they have achieved. We are excited to continue our incredible partnership for many years to come, and can’t wait to see what lies ahead for both New Legacy and their students.
