ULC in Washington DC for Enterprise Community Partners Legislative Action Day
As part of the Enterprise Community Partners Public Policy team, ULC’s Aaron Miripol is in Washington, DC to participate in Enterprise’s 4th Annual Legislative Action Day. An important meeting took place today with Colorado Senator Michael Bennet, to talk about the critical benefits of both housing and new markets tax credits. The Policy team was able to demonstrate the dire need to ensure these two Treasury programs are preserved and strengthened. Key to Enterprise’s work in Colorado is the creation of Social Impact Bonds, to provide services to residents in permanent supportive housing.
ULC’s real estate investment at 40th & Colorado in partnership with the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, is a shining example of how Social Impact Bonds can lead to the development of affordable housing that directly benefits Denver’s most vulnerable population.
Renaissance at North Colorado Station will include 103 units with a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartment homes; 26 will be reserved for homeless veterans.
The Coalition will provide supportive housing for at least 50 homeless households with on-site and off-site services to help maintain and increase their independence, including access to integrated health care through the Stout Street Health Center. The affordable apartments will be targeted to families and individuals with incomes between 30 and 60 percent of the Area Median Income.
The Enterprise Public Policy team works with members of Congress, the Administration, community development organizations and other stakeholders to safeguard, expand and improve housing and community development programs that advance Enterprise’s goal of ending housing insecurity in the United States.
Strategic priorities for 2015 include:
- Protect, strengthen and expand the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit
- Restore the New Markets Tax Credit
- Defend and strengthen key federal housing and community development programs
- Advance holistic community development policies
- Ensure that any future housing finance system supports affordable rental housing
- Produce timely research & develop innovative policy solutions
