ULC Remembers Denver Housing Advocate Sal Carpio
The Urban Land Conservancy would like to recognize the loss of one of Denver’s most respected affordable housing advocates, Sal Carpio.
Mr. Carpio helped establish ULC partner Del Norte Neighborhood Development, a nonprofit housing provider in North Denver and was a visionary leader for the Denver Housing Authority (DHA) from 1994 – 2007. During this time Denver’s housing expanded, including DHA’s Hope VI redevelopments in Curtis Park and Five Points/Uptown. He was also instrumental in bringing market-rate and low-income apartments into the DHA housing model. This new structure was critical to the success of Benedict Park Place, where ULC currently calls home. As a tenant of one of Mr. Carpio’s DHA’s redevelopments, ULC is proud to be a part of his vision of developing affordable housing and office space in central Denver.
ULC Board Member and former DHA Chair Myrna Hipp states, “Sal was one of the early leaders and advocates for affordable housing in Colorado, both as a Denver City Councilman and Director of DHA. He was always a fighter for Denver’s low income residents, no matter which neighborhood they lived in.”
